What’s in these numbers

Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:

  • A new garbage disposal of the grade shown, mounted under the sink and connected to the drain, with the old one taken out.
  • Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
  • Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.

Not in them: a new outlet or switch where there isn’t one, an air switch, a new drain line or trap, connecting a dishwasher drain for the first time, and permits.

Basic, mid-range or upgraded

The three totals are three price points for the unit. Between two disposals, compare the specs on the box: the horsepower, what the grinding parts are made of, and the warranty.

What moves the price

  • Grade. Each step up costs more for the unit itself.
  • Power. A disposal needs power under the sink; adding an outlet or switch is electrical work on top.
  • A first install. Where there was no disposal before, the drain, the sink flange and the power are new work.
  • Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a garbage disposal?

How much is a basic garbage disposal installed?

About $450 to $650, typically $550.

How much is an upgraded garbage disposal installed?

The disposal leaked into the cabinet. What else is there?
