How the tiles are counted
Area: length times width. A 12 by 10 foot floor is 120 square feet.
Each tile: its width and length plus one grout joint each way, in inches, divided by 144. A 12 by 24 inch tile with a 1/8 inch joint covers 12.125 × 24.125 ÷ 144 = 2.031 square feet.
Tiles: the area divided by what each tile covers: 120 ÷ 2.031 = 59.1.
Waste: extra for the cuts at the walls and for breakage. The calculator starts at 10%; a diagonal or herringbone layout cuts more tiles.
Boxes: the tiles to buy divided by the tiles in a box, rounded up. The box says how many it holds, or how many square feet it covers.
About 49 with a 1/8 inch joint, or 55 with 10% for cuts.
How much extra tile should I buy?
