What’s in these numbers
Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:
- A tile floor, the old floor taken up, with 10% over the floor for cuts at the walls.
- Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
- Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.
The sizes are the floor’s square feet. A small bathroom floor is about 50; a kitchen about 200.
Not in them: tile walls and shower surrounds, backer board or subfloor repair, heated floors, a new toilet seal or setting fixtures, and moving appliances. The shower installation cost guide and the bathtub replacement cost guide price the fixtures.
What moves the price
- The tile. Large-format, natural stone and patterned tile cost more than standard tile, and some need a flatter floor.
- The layout. Diagonal and herringbone patterns cut more tile at the walls and take longer.
- The floor under it. Tile wants a stiff, flat base; soft or uneven subfloor is fixed or covered first.
- Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.
