How the price is worked out

1. The floor area is the room's length times its width: a 14 by 12 foot room is 168 sq ft.
2. The price per square foot comes from the cost guides: each floor priced the way a contractor's estimate is priced, in every area of the country, with the contractor's overhead and profit (20%) and the state's average sales tax inside.
3. The range is the area times the low and the high price per square foot, rounded down and up to round dollars. Pick a state for its own range.

What each floor includes

• Laminate: snap-lock laminate, the old floor taken up. The laminate cost guide has it by room size and state.
• Vinyl plank: vinyl plank flooring, the old floor taken up. The vinyl plank cost guide has it by room size and state.
• Carpet and pad: average-grade carpet and pad, the old carpet torn out. The carpet and pad cost guide has it by room size and state.
• Hardwood: #1 common oak, sanded and finished, the old floor taken up. The hardwood cost guide has it by room size and state.
• Tile: a tile floor, the old floor taken up. The tile cost guide has it by room size and state.
• Epoxy coating: an epoxy finish in two coats over concrete. The epoxy coating cost guide has it by room size and state.

Not included: moving furniture, stairs, repairs to the subfloor or the slab, trim and baseboard, and transitions between rooms. The baseboard cost guide prices the trim.

Common questions

How do I measure a room for flooring?

Measure the length and width along the floor, wall to wall, and multiply. Closets count. The guide to measuring a room covers odd shapes.

Should I add waste?

The prices here already allow for cuts: carpet, laminate, vinyl plank, hardwood and tile are priced with 10% over the floor. Type the room's own size.

Why does my state cost more or less?
