What’s in these numbers

Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:

  • Vinyl plank flooring, the old floor taken up, with 10% over the floor for cuts.
  • Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
  • Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.

Not in them: gluing down over concrete or wood, quarter round and transitions, subfloor leveling, stairs, and moving furniture.

Vinyl plank, laminate or hardwood

On the same rooms, priced the same way:

Floor Three rooms, 500 sq ft
Vinyl plank $5,000 to $6,200
Laminate $5,000 to $6,300
Hardwood, oak, sanded and finished $10,500 to $13,000

Totals include the contractor’s overhead and profit (20%) and the state’s average sales tax. The flooring cost calculator works out any room in each floor.

What moves the price

  • Grade. Thicker wear layers and higher-grade planks cost more.
  • Floating or glued. Click-together planks float over the subfloor; glued-down planks over concrete or wood take more labor.
  • The subfloor. Planks want a flat floor; dips and humps are leveled first.
  • Trim. Quarter round at the walls and transitions at doorways are priced by the foot.
  • Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.
