What’s in these numbers

Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:

  • A new tub of the type shown, set and connected, with the old one taken out.
  • Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
  • Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.

Not in them: tearing out and redoing the tile or surround around a standard tub, the faucet and valve, the drain parts, floor and framing repair, the electrical circuit a jetted tub needs, and permits.

Three kinds of tubs

Tub What it is
Standard tub A tub set in an alcove, with the walls above it finished separately
Tub and shower in one piece A fiberglass tub with its walls molded on, no tile above
Jetted tub An acrylic tub with jets and a pump

A one-piece tub and shower is a single molded unit: measure the doors and halls on the way in, or use a sectional unit that goes together in the room.

What moves the price

  • The walls around it. A standard tub’s flange sits behind the tile or surround, so the bottom of the walls is opened to get it out.
  • The tub. High-grade and premium tubs cost more; cast iron is heavy to carry out and in.
  • Plumbing. A new valve, or moving the drain, adds a plumber’s work.
  • The floor. Water from an old leak can rot the subfloor under a tub.
  • Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a bathtub?

About $1,200 to $1,550 for a standard tub with the old one taken out, typically $1,350, before the walls around it.

How much is a tub and shower combination?

About $1,750 to $2,150 for a one-piece fiberglass tub and shower, typically $1,950.

How much is a jetted tub installed?

About $2,950 to $3,450 for an acrylic jetted tub, before its electrical circuit.

What about the tile around the tub?

Wall tile is priced by the square foot of wall, on a line of its own; the tile installation cost guide prices tile floors. A shower over the tub means tile or a surround on the three walls.
