How the bricks are counted
- Wall area: length times height, less the openings. A 30 by 8 foot wall is 240 square feet.
- Bricks a square foot: 144 divided by the brick's length plus one joint times its height plus one joint, in inches. A modular brick, 7 5/8 by 2 1/4 inches on its face, with a 3/8 inch joint, is 8 by 2 5/8 inches laid: 144 ÷ (8 × 2.625) = 6.86.
- Bricks: the area times the bricks a square foot, then waste for cuts and broken bricks.
Bricks a square foot, by face size
| Face, inches | Bricks per sq ft |
|---|---|
| 7.625 × 2.25 | 6.86 |
| 7.625 × 2.75 | 5.76 |
| 7.625 × 3.625 | 4.50 |
| 11.625 × 1.625 | 6.00 |
| 11.625 × 2.25 | 4.57 |
| 11.625 × 3.625 | 3.00 |
All with a 3/8 inch mortar joint. The brick's face is its length and height as it shows in the wall.
