What’s in these numbers

Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:

Kitchen Base cabinets Wall cabinets
Small 10 linear ft 8 linear ft
Mid-size 16 linear ft 14 linear ft
Large 24 linear ft 20 linear ft
  • Standard-grade cabinets, set, leveled and fastened, with the old cabinets taken out.
  • Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
  • Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.

Not in them: countertops, the sink and faucet, appliances, backsplash, crown molding and trim pieces, hardware, and plumbing or electrical changes. The kitchen remodel cost guide adds the tops, sink, floor and paint.

Measuring cabinets

Cabinets are measured by the linear foot along the wall: the run of base cabinets under the counter, and the run of wall cabinets above it, measured apart. An L-shaped kitchen with an 8 foot and a 10 foot wall has 18 feet of base cabinet, less the gap for a range or refrigerator.

What moves the price

  • Grade. High, premium and deluxe grades cost far more per foot than standard.
  • Wall cabinets or base. Base cabinets cost more per foot than wall cabinets.
  • Extras. Islands, pantry cabinets, crown, filler and end panels add to the run.
  • The layout. Moving plumbing or wiring for a new layout adds trades to the job.
  • Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.
