What’s in these numbers

Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:

10 by 10 kitchen 12 by 14 kitchen 14 by 18 kitchen
Base cabinets 10 ft 16 ft 24 ft
Wall cabinets 8 ft 14 ft 20 ft
Quartz countertops 22 sq ft 35 sq ft 53 sq ft
Sink and faucet One of each One of each One of each
Vinyl plank floor 100 sq ft 168 sq ft 252 sq ft
Walls painted Two coats Two coats Two coats

The old cabinets, tops, sink and floor come out first. On top of the work:

  • Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
  • Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.

Not in them: appliances, a backsplash, an island, new lighting or circuits, moving the sink or gas line, drywall repair, and permits.

What moves the price

  • Cabinets. Custom and high-grade cabinets cost more by the foot. The kitchen cabinet cost guide prices them alone.
  • Countertops. Granite, marble and quartz are priced by the square foot; laminate costs less. The countertop installation cost guide puts the three side by side.
  • Layout. Moving the sink, range or a wall means new plumbing, gas or framing.
  • Appliances. They’re bought separately, on top of these totals.
  • Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.

Pricing a remodel line by line

A kitchen estimate is a list: cabinets by the foot, tops by the square foot, the floor by the square foot, each fixture out and in. BluMatrix measures the room with the phone and writes the whole list at current prices for the ZIP code, ready to send for signing.
