What’s in these numbers

Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:

  • A new pre-hung exterior door, the door in its frame, in the grade shown, with the old door taken out.
  • Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
  • Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.

Not in them: sidelights and transoms, the lockset and deadbolt, a storm door, paint or stain, an 8 foot or double door, rot repair in the sill or framing, and permits.

Three grades

Door What it is
Insulated steel A metal door with an insulated core, flush or paneled
High grade Insulated steel or wood, a grade up
Fiberglass or wood with detail Premium doors with molded or carved detail

What moves the price

  • Grade. Fiberglass and detailed wood doors cost more than insulated steel.
  • Size and style. 8 foot doors, double doors, sidelights and transoms add parts and labor.
  • The opening. A door cut to fit an old opening, or a rotted sill, adds work.
  • Finish. Doors painted or stained on site add a line of their own.
  • Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace a front door?

About $750 to $900 for a pre-hung insulated steel door with the old one taken out, typically $800.

How much is a high-grade front door installed?

About $1,050 to $1,200, typically $1,100.

How much is a fiberglass front door installed?

About $2,000 to $2,300 for a premium fiberglass or detailed wood door.

Is a pre-hung door easier to install?

A pre-hung door comes in its frame with the hinges set, so it goes into the opening as one unit; a slab alone has to be fitted and hinged to the old frame. A storm door over it is priced in the storm door cost guide.
