What’s in these numbers

Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:

  • A pre-hung interior door unit: the door already hung in its frame, set in the opening, with the old door and frame taken out.
  • Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
  • Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.

Not in them: painting or staining the door and trim, new hardware sets, casing upgrades, resizing an opening, and double, French or barn doors.

Pre-hung or slab

  • Pre-hung: the door comes hung in a new frame, with hinges, ready to set in the opening; used when the frame is damaged or the door is a new size.
  • Slab only: just the door, hung on the existing frame. Less material, but the hinges and latch have to line up with the old frame.

What moves the price

  • The door. Solid-core, paneled, wood species and 8 foot doors cost more than a standard unit.
  • Double and specialty doors. French, Dutch, barn and double doors are priced on their own.
  • Finishing. Paint, stain and new hardware are extra steps.
  • Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.

For an outside door, the front door replacement cost guide prices steel, high-grade and fiberglass doors.
