How to read a tape measure: the marks, the fractions, and the 16 inch and 19.2 inch marks
Each inch is split into sixteenths, and the length of a mark tells its fraction: the longest is the inch, then the half, the quarters, the eighths, and the shortest are sixteenths. Count the inches, then the marks past the last inch: 5 inches and three sixteenth marks is 5 3/16. Past 12 inches, a tape reads feet and inches: 64 inches is 5 feet 4 inches.

The marks in one inch
| Mark | Fraction | In sixteenths |
|---|---|---|
| Longest | 1 inch | 16/16 |
| Next longest, in the middle | 1/2 | 8/16 |
| Quarter marks | 1/4 and 3/4 | 4/16 and 12/16 |
| Eighth marks | 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, 7/8 | 2/16, 6/16, 10/16, 14/16 |
| Shortest | Each sixteenth | 1/16, 3/16, 5/16 and on |
Reading a measurement
- Read the last whole inch before the end of what you’re measuring.
- Count the marks past it in sixteenths, or read the longest mark you landed on.
- Reduce the fraction: 8/16 is 1/2, 4/16 is 1/4, 6/16 is 3/8.
For example, 3 marks past 5 inches is 5 3/16 inches, and landing on the middle mark past 7 inches is 7 1/2.
Feet and inches
A foot is 12 inches. A tape numbers the inches all the way along, and some also mark each foot. To turn inches into feet and inches, divide by 12: 64 inches is 5 feet 4 inches, written 5’ 4”. The square footage calculator takes measurements in feet and inches as you read them.
The 16 inch and 19.2 inch marks
- A highlighted mark every 16 inches is for stud layout. The code’s stud table sets the maximum spacing at 16 or 24 inches, depending on the stud and what the wall carries (IRC Table R602.3(5)); on a wall framed at 16, the marks at 16, 32, 48 and on fall on stud centers.
- A small black diamond every 19.2 inches splits 8 feet into five even spaces (96 ÷ 5 = 19.2), a layout used for joists and trusses.
Not every tape has them; the numbers along the blade are the same either way.
The hook
The metal hook at the end is loose on purpose: it slides by its own thickness, so the tape reads the same whether it’s hooked over an edge or pushed against a wall. A bent hook throws every measurement off.
Common questions
What are the small lines on a tape measure?
The shortest lines are sixteenths of an inch. The next longest are eighths, then quarters, then the half inch.
How do you read 5/8 on a tape measure?
Count 10 sixteenth marks past the inch, or find the eighth mark between the half and the 3/4: 5/8 is 10/16.
Why does a tape measure have red numbers every 16 inches?
They mark stud centers for walls framed 16 inches apart; the residential code’s stud table allows 16 or 24 inch spacing, by the stud and its load (IRC Table R602.3(5)).
Is there a faster way to measure a room?
For the floor plan of a whole room, the room measuring guide goes through it by tape, and BluMatrix measures the room from a phone scan.
