What’s in these numbers

Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:

  • 5 inch aluminum gutters and downspouts, the old ones taken down. Gutter and downspout are priced by the foot together.
  • Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
  • Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.

The sizes are feet of gutter plus downspout: a one-story house 40 by 30 feet with gutters on its two long sides has about 84 feet of gutter, and four 10 foot downspouts add 40 more.

Not in them: gutter guards, fascia repair behind the gutters, 6 inch or seamless upgrades, splash blocks and underground drains.

Gutter types and sizes

Type What it is
K-style A flat back and a front shaped like crown molding
Half round A half circle
Box Square sides and bottom

Gutters come 5 inches wide, 6 inches, and 7 to 8 inches; a wider gutter carries more water, for a bigger or steeper roof. They’re made in aluminum, copper, galvanized steel and vinyl, and copper costs far more by the foot than aluminum. The guide to installing gutters covers the slope, the hangers and the downspouts. The types of gutters guide goes through each style, material and size, and the gutter guard cost guide prices guards on top.

How much gutter a house needs

  1. Measure the eaves that drain: the level edges of the roof, not the sloped rakes.
  2. Add the downspouts: the wall height at each one, with at least one for each run of gutter.
  3. Type the total into the box above for the range at that length.

Where expansive or collapsible soils are known to exist, the code calls for a controlled way to collect the roof’s water, such as gutters and downspouts, and discharge it at least 5 feet from the foundation walls or into an approved drain (IRC R801.3).

Common questions

How much do gutters cost per foot installed?

$10.50 to $14.50 a linear ft for 5 inch aluminum, gutter and downspout together, with the old ones taken down, overhead, profit and sales tax.

How much are gutters for a 2,000 sq ft house?

It depends on the eaves, not the floor. A one-story house with about 160 feet of gutter and downspout comes to about $1,650 to $2,350, typically $1,950.

What are seamless gutters?

Gutters formed on site in one piece for each run, so there are no joints along the run.
