The kinds of roof vents

Vent Where Intake or exhaust
Soffit vents Under the eaves Intake
Ridge vent Along the ridge, under a cap Exhaust
Box (static) vents Near the ridge, cut through the roof Exhaust
Turbine vents Near the ridge; spin in the wind Exhaust
Power vents Near the ridge; a fan, electric or solar (attic fan cost) Exhaust
Gable vents In the gable walls Either, by the wind

Air comes in low and leaves high: cool air enters at the soffits and warm, damp air leaves near the ridge. GAF’s rule for a balanced system is that the exhaust never exceeds the intake.

How much venting an attic needs

The code calls for cross ventilation in enclosed attics (IRC R806.1) and sets the minimum net free vent area (R806.2):

  • 1/150 of the attic’s floor area, as the rule.
  • 1/300 when both of these hold: 40 to 50% of the vent area is high, within 3 feet of the ridge, with the rest in the bottom third of the attic; and, in climate zones 6, 7 and 8, a Class I or II vapor retarder is on the warm side of the ceiling.
Attic floor At 1/150 At 1/300
1,000 sq ft 6.7 sq ft (960 sq in) 3.3 sq ft (480 sq in)
1,500 sq ft 10 sq ft (1,440 sq in) 5 sq ft (720 sq in)
2,000 sq ft 13.3 sq ft (1,920 sq in) 6.7 sq ft (960 sq in)

Net free area is the open area of a vent after its louvers and screen; each vent’s label or sheet gives it, usually in square inches. Add the vents’ figures up to the total, about half high and half low.

The code’s other vent rules

  • Openings are 1/16 to 1/4 inch, or larger with corrosion-resistant screen, protected from rain, snow, birds and rodents (R806.1).
  • Air space: at least 1 inch between the insulation and the roof sheathing at the vents, and insulation can’t block the eave vents (R806.3). The blown-in insulation cost guide prices the attic floor.
  • Installation follows the vent maker’s instructions (R806.4).
  • Unvented attics are allowed when the attic is inside the building’s insulated envelope and the code’s other conditions are met (R806.5).

Common questions

How many roof vents do I need?

Work out the net free area the attic needs, then divide by each vent’s own figure. A 1,500 sq ft attic at 1/300 needs 720 square inches: about 360 high and 360 low.

Is a ridge vent better than box vents?

Both are exhaust vents. A ridge vent runs along the ridge as one long opening; box vents are single openings near the ridge. The ridge vent guide works out how many feet an attic needs. Either works when the vent area adds up and the intake at the soffits matches it.

Can you have too much attic ventilation?

The code sets a minimum, not a maximum. GAF’s rule is that the exhaust should never exceed the intake, so adding exhaust without intake unbalances the attic.

Are vents part of a roof replacement estimate?

They’re lines of their own. The roof replacement cost guide lists vents among the extras on top of the shingles.
