3-tab vs architectural shingles: how they differ, and what each costs on a roof
A 3-tab shingle is one flat layer cut into three equal tabs, so the roof reads as even rows. An architectural shingle is two or more layers bonded together, thicker, with shadow lines. On the same 1,800 sq ft house, an architectural roof typically comes to $14,000 and a 3-tab roof to $13,200.

How they’re made
- 3-tab shingles are a single layer of asphalt-coated mat with granules on top. Two cutouts along the bottom edge make three tabs, all the same size, so the roof reads as neat even rows.
- Architectural shingles (laminated or dimensional) are two or more layers bonded together. The top layer has cutouts of different widths over a solid bottom layer, which gives the roof depth and shadow lines instead of a flat grid.
Both are asphalt shingles under the building code, with the same rules: at least a 2/12 pitch, and two layers of underlayment from 2/12 up to 4/12 (IRC R905.2.2).
Side by side
| 3-tab | Architectural | |
|---|---|---|
| Layers | One | Two or more, bonded |
| Look | Flat, even rows | Thicker, shadowed, varied |
| Bundles per square | 3 for most | 3 for most; some heavier lines 4 or more |
| Lowest pitch | 2/12 | 2/12 |
| Roof on a 1,800 sq ft house, typical | $13,200 | $14,000 |
Wind ratings and warranties are set by each manufacturer for each product line; the wrapper and the manufacturer’s product sheet give them for a given shingle.
What each costs on a roof
The figures are the same one-story houses with plain 6/12 gable roofs, priced the same way: the old roof torn off, new shingles with felt, drip edge, starter, ridge cap and three pipe flashings.
| House | 3-tab | Architectural |
|---|---|---|
| 1,200 sq ft | $7,700 to $11,400 | $8,200 to $12,100 |
| 1,800 sq ft | $11,200 to $16,400 | $11,800 to $17,400 |
| 2,500 sq ft | $14,800 to $21,750 | $15,700 to $23,250 |
Totals include the contractor’s overhead and profit (20%) and the state’s average sales tax. Each range runs from the lower-priced parts of the country to the higher-priced ones.
The two come out close because only the shingles change: the tear-off, the edges, the ridge cap and the flashings are the same job either way. The roof replacement cost guide has the architectural figures by state.
Which one to pick
- Architectural when the roof is the house’s for the long run, when looks matter, or when the neighborhood’s roofs are already dimensional.
- 3-tab when the budget is tight, on an outbuilding, or to match an existing 3-tab roof for a repair.
Common questions
Can you tell the difference from the street?
Usually. A 3-tab roof shows straight, even rows of identical tabs; an architectural roof shows uneven, layered edges and shadow lines.
Do architectural shingles need a different install?
The basics are the same: the same underlayment, starter, nailing in the manufacturer’s nailing zone, and ridge cap. Each line’s instructions set the nail count and pattern; follow them for the warranty.
How many bundles for a roof?
Most of both come three bundles to a square of 100 square feet; some heavier shingles come four or five to a square, and the bundle’s wrapper says (GAF). The roofing calculator counts the bundles with waste for any roof.
