What’s in these numbers
Each total is a typical job, priced the way a contractor’s estimate is priced:
- A ceiling fan with a light, hung and wired on an existing ceiling box rated for a fan.
- Overhead and profit: 20%, the standard markup on a contractor’s estimate.
- Sales tax on the materials, at the state’s average rate.
Not in them: running new wiring or a new switch, replacing a light box with a fan-rated box, a down rod for a high ceiling, high-grade fans, and patching the ceiling.
What moves the price
- The box. A fan hangs on a box made to carry one; a plain light box is swapped out first.
- New wiring. Where there’s no fixture, running a new circuit or switch adds an electrician’s work.
- Height. Vaulted and high ceilings take a down rod and a taller ladder or scaffold.
- The fan. Fans without a light cost less; high and premium grades more.
- Where you live. Pick your state in the box above.
Common questions
How much does it cost to install one ceiling fan?
About $475 to $650 for a fan with a light on an existing fan-rated box, typically $550.
How much for several fans?
About $850 to $1,150 for two and $1,700 to $2,250 for four.
Can a ceiling fan go where a light is?
Yes, if the box is rated for a fan; the box is marked. If it isn’t, the box is replaced with one that is, before the fan goes up.
